The history of Huzhou University dated back to the year of 1916 when the Qiantang Dao (“Dao” is an old administrative unit, almost like the “county”) set up the No. 3 Teachers’ Training School, and the university began to carry out higher education programs in 1958. The music education program stretched back to the first Music Teachers’ Class in 1983 by the Huzhou Teachers School. In 1998, the Music Program (bachelor of arts) was instituted with the founding of the Art Department; on this basis,in 2001, the school of Art came to be established, including the Music department. In January 2022, the Music school was officially established. In October of the same year, in collaboration with the People's Government of Wuxing District, Huzhou City, we established the Music and Drama Industry Institute, focusing on the meta-verse study on the creation and communication of stage art.

Our school has358 full-time students and 46 faculty and staff members (36 full-time teachers). There are 6 professors and 14 associate professors, accounting for 55% of the teachers; 42% of the teachers have ever studied or worked overseas, ranging from Germany, Austria, Belarus, Ukraine, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Mongolia and the Philippines. 18 teachers are Ph.D holders (or Ph.D candidates), thus making the ratio up to 87% for those having master’s degrees and above. Music Education (pedagogical) is the BA program in our School. At present, our school has Music Education Department, Music & Dance Department, Art Performance Center and Education Training Center. The school enjoys a good learning environment and advanced facilities, providing an academically and artistically enriching atmosphere for immersive learning. It also houses a range of practice rooms and training spaces including a standard concert hall with 400 seats, professional rehearsal halls, an intelligent piano-room building, dance rooms, recording studios, digital piano classrooms, MIDI music classrooms, instrument practice rooms and so forth, in addition to a 9-foot Steinway&Sons grand piano, a 7-foot Yamaha grand piano, and a 7-foot Seiler grand piano.

Our school carries through the university’s guideline, that is, adapt to local conditions, reflect our own characteristics, serve the local, inheriting and carrying forward the tradition of pedagogy. We will also accelerate the development of the disciplines including music, dance, drama and film studies, deepening and consolidating the foundation of “new liberal arts”, so that we will further the branding of campus culture and focus on making our own contributions for building Zhejiang Province into a demonstration zone for achieving common prosperity and building a New Era Cultural Zhejiang Province. In so doing, we aim at forging a new highland of music and drama in the Yangtze River Delta, which is of quite influence and at quite a level with distinct characteristics and prominent advantages.

Our School lays increasing emphasis on our theory about schooling, always taking “students as  the basis”, “scholars as the focal point”, “academics as essentials” and “disciplines as the premise.” In line with the development laws of our disciplines supported by focusing on our research orientations and layout, we have set up six research institutes, namely Music Research Institute, Drama Research Institute, Sericulture Music Center, the “Belt and Road” Music Communication Research Center, China Music Education Research Center, and Teachers Education Development Center. We have implemented the Training Plan for Top Talents in Disciplinary Competitions in the interest of the students who participate in high-level teacher training skills competitions, music (dance) skills competitions, and innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, so as to help them achieve breakthroughs in such high-level disciplinary competitions. In the past five years, our faculty members have taken over 40 high-level projects regarding pedagogy, scientific research, innovation and entrepreneurship, among which 8 are nation level, 12 provincial/ministry level, 12 municipal level. In addition, we have been granted 20 awards in varied fields, published a total of 20 papers or monographs, and held over 100 “HU Music Forums” joined by experts and scholars from universities and industries.

We welcome international exchange and collaboration. We are looking forward to working with you!
